Worst 5 Signings Of The 2014/2015 Premier League Season So Far
The summer of 2014 was a busy one for the Premier League, with Manchester United, Southampton and Liverpool especially spending big to repair and replace their squads. Transfers are never always a success and here are our worst five Premier League signings of the summer based on this season's performances:
Luke Shaw (Southampton to Manchester United)
At £27 million, and a rumoured £120,000 per week contract , you wouldn't blame Manchester United for expecting more than they have got from the promising English left back.
Restricted to just seven first team appearances in all competitions so far this season, Shaw's injuries and infrequent form have seriously hindered his ability to settle into United's first XI. With Ashley Young doing well at left wing back in Louis Van Gaal's 3-5-2 system, things are not looking promising for Shaw in his first season at Old Trafford.
Mario Balotelli (AC Milan to Liverpool)
'Gamble' seemed to be the word thrown around when Liverpool brought in the controversial Italian striker from AC Milan. If so, Rodgers has dealt a poor hand with this transfer.
A woeful goal return (two in fifteen appearances) combined with a subdued, lazy attitude on the pitch has led to the Anfield faithful becoming increasingly frustrated with their new forward. Especially when one compares him to the man he replaced, the sensational Luis Suarez.
Always an entertaining character to have in England but unless his performances improve soon, we might well be seeing the last of Mario Balotelli in the English Premier League.
Remy Cabella (Montpellier to Newcastle United)
After the start from hell, things have begun to turn around for Newcastle after they put together five straight wins through October and November. However, it's fair to say the £12m signing of Cabella from Montpellier has not been one of Pardew's smartest moves.
The forward is yet to score in sixteen appearances for the club and has missed a host of great chances, including one from two yards out in the recent League Cup quarter final against Tottenham.
Radamel Falcao (AS Monaco to Manchester United)
Another who has had an injury blighted start at Old Trafford, but even when fit has found himself behind Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and even 19 year old James Wilson in the pecking order.
His place in this list is also contributed by the massive expectation that came with his transfer following some outstanding form in recent years for Porto, Atletico Madrid and Monaco. He is only at United on a season loan and at this rate it seems they may try and avoid keeping him on in the future, if his contract allows such a decision.
Dejan Lovren (Southampton to Liverpool)
Has committed six major defensive errors in the league this season, more than any other player. His large transfer fee seems to have been misplaced based on evidence of his performances this season.
One of three players Liverpool bought from Southampton in the summer, after he enjoyed a great spell with the Saints, but Lovren has done nothing to stabilise a shaky Liverpool defence. They will need to find the form he has so far left behind at Southampton in order to improve the team's league position.
